The streets of the Cuban capital Havana
were the meeting place of over 70 old cars that raced themselves
in an exceptional rally. Among them you could see not just one
wonderful Cuba red Chevrolet. Perfectly preserved, the cars
attracted thousands of fans of the automobiles. The 70 cars
raced on a run of 60 kilometers on the streets of Havana. The
event was organized by the National Club of the Epoch
Automobiles and by the Authority for sports from the Cuban
capital and it was just the 4th event of this type from the last
half of the century. Among the models present at this attractive
rally, were some models of motorcycles of English fabrication.
In their big majority, the automobiles were built in the 50s
period but you can easily identify some models from the 20s and
the 30s. Cuba is the heaven, for many of those who have a
passion for the classic cars. The collectors can find here
models in perfect condition and this is because many Cubans have
this type of cars. The strict law forbids the population to
commercialize cars made after 1959. ‘El bloqueo’ is the name of
the USA embargo towards Cuba (the word means blockade) in
Spanish. The embargo is financial, economic and commercial. The
embargo started in 1960 and it became a total one in 1962,
February. In March 1958, the arms embargo started because of a
conflict that begun in Cuba between the government of Batista
and the rebels. In the summer of 1960 the USA reduced the brown
sugar quota for Cuba at 7.000.000 tons as an answer to the Cuba
government’s expropriations. The total embargo still continues
although in the fall of 2008 the United Nations condemned this
embargo for the seventeenth time. |
