The Catedral
de San Cristobal de la Habana is known in English as the
Cathedral of Saint Christopher of Havana. The Cathedral of Saint
Christopher in Havana, Cuba, started to be constructed in 1748,
but the construction stopped in 1767 because Jesus Company,
which was in charge of project was expelled from Spain. Not
longer later there was an agreement to continue the construction
of the Catedral de San Cristobal de la Habana. The construction
of the cathedral ended in 1777. On the picture you can observe
the Catedral de San Cristobal and it is one of the examples of
the baroque style in Cuba. It was only in 1787 that the building
got the rank of cathedral. From 1796 to 1898 the body of
Christopher Columbus laid in a mausoleum. A mausoleum is a sort
of structure as a monument where there is inside a place or a
chamber for one or more dead persons. The mausoleum may be
considered as a tomb and in a Christian mausoleum it is
sometimes with a chapel. The word mausoleum comes from the
Mausoleum of Maussollos which is located in Turkey; it is the
burial place of the King Maussollos. The tomb of the King made
part of the seven wonders of the ancient world. |
