Vinales, in the province of Pinar
del Rio, is an agricultural based economy. With the low mountain
ranges of Sierra del Rosario and Sierra Los Organos towering the
plantation with the Mogotes remnants of the Jurassic period the
high green trees act as fruits act as windbreak to protect the
seedlings budding after the rain. In the lush valley of Vinales,
the soil made of varieties of red is fertile. On the flat
surfaced land, blessed by the gods, tobacco, sugar, coffee,
yucca (cassava), vegetables, fruits and even paddy fields are
grown. Using traditional techniques like ox ploughing, farmers
activate themselves all the year round to reap the fruits of
their work. Ecological as well as agro ecological agriculture is
practiced in Vinales to reap a better yield. Organic or semi
organic, crop rotation which enrich the soil, green manure and
bio pesticides together with the knowledge passed on through
generation of farmers make the agriculture a flourishing
business in this part of rural Cuba. This is the place where the
main crop is tobacco and the ‘bohios near the fields. Many of
the brand name cigars come from Vinales. |
